Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka is one of Asia’s most visited theme parks — and for good reason.
What sets it apart from every other Universal Studios in the world is its mix of Hollywood blockbusters with Japanese pop culture. Mario, Harry Potter, Donkey Kong — nowhere else on earth do you get this combination. If you’re visiting Japan and have even a passing interest in theme parks, USJ deserves a full day.
Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

Tickets — What to Buy
Studio Pass (Park Entry)
- Adult (12+): ¥8,600–¥11,900
- Children (4–11): check the official website
- Under 3: free
- USJ uses dynamic pricing — the same ticket costs different amounts depending on the date. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive days can be as much as ¥3,300. Weekdays (especially Tuesday–Thursday) are significantly cheaper.
Universal Express Pass
- Lets you skip the main queue on selected rides
- Purchased separately from your Studio Pass
- Prices vary widely depending on date and package
- Worth buying on weekends and peak season — popular rides can hit 2-hour waits without it
Super Nintendo World Area Entry Ticket
- Free, but required to enter the area
- Obtained through the official USJ app on the day
- Gets distributed early — grab one the moment you enter the park
💡 Buy tickets in advance through the official USJ website or an authorised reseller like Klook. Same-day tickets sell out, especially during peak season.
When to Go — Crowds
Busiest times of year
- Golden Week (late April–May)
- Summer holidays (July–August)
- Halloween Horror Nights (September–November) ← the busiest period of the year
- Christmas and New Year
Quieter times
- Weekdays in January–February
- Weekdays in October–December
Day of the week
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are consistently the least crowded. Weekends are busy year-round.
Halloween Horror Nights — What to Expect
I visited during Halloween Horror Nights, and I want to be honest: this is the most crowded the park gets all year. Not just weekends — even weekdays are packed.
But the atmosphere is completely different from a regular visit. After dark, zombies and horror characters roam the park in character, and the energy is genuinely electric.
For families with young children, there are designated zombie-free routes through the park, so you can avoid the scare zones entirely.
We were in a hurry to leave and didn’t take the bypass route — but travelling with young children, we moved fast enough that the zombies gave us a respectful amount of space 😂 They were surprisingly considerate.
🎢 Ride Rankings — Wait Times & What to Expect
#1 DK Donkey Kong Country: Rocket Coaster (140–160 min wait)

Plenty of speed, but not much airtime. Accessible enough for kids, which is part of why it’s so popular. Consistently the longest wait in the park.
#2 Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge (100–130 min wait)
High on immersion, lower on thrill. You wear AR goggles and compete for points in a Mario Kart-style experience. More game than ride. Great for families.
#3 Hollywood Dream — The Ride (80–100 min wait)
Real speed and a genuine sense of flying over the whole park. You choose your own soundtrack before boarding, which makes the experience feel surprisingly personal. The Backdrop (reverse) version is also available.
#4 Space Fantasy — The Ride (60–90 min wait)

Fast. Really fast. Not heavy on airtime, but the sheer speed makes it one of the most exhilarating rides in the park. A USJ classic. During Horror Nights, it often gets an anime collaboration makeover — when I visited, it was SPY×FAMILY themed.
Thrill Ride Comparison
🦖 The Flying Dinosaur
Significant airtime. More than Space Fantasy, less than Jurassic Park’s drop. Pure speed and adrenaline — the best pure coaster in the park for thrill-seekers.
🦕 Jurassic Park — The Ride
The final drop in complete darkness is the centrepiece — and the airtime is intense. This isn’t a speed ride; it builds slowly and hits hard at the end. You will get wet. Bring a poncho or accept your fate.
🧙 Flight of the Hippogriff
Low airtime, short duration. This is a compact coaster designed for the Harry Potter atmosphere rather than thrills. Great entry point for younger riders or those new to coasters.
⚡ Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

The sensation of flying through the wizarding world — but this isn’t a traditional coaster. It’s a screen-based ride with physical motion. Immersive and impressive, but motion sickness is real. If you’re prone to it, sit toward the front and fix your eyes on the screen.

👶 Kids’ Areas
USJ isn’t just for thrill-seekers. There are dedicated areas with rides and attractions designed for younger children, many with no height restrictions. Character meet-and-greet photo spots are also available throughout the park, making it a genuinely family-friendly day out — not just for the adults.
🍄 Super Nintendo World — Something Unexpected

I wasn’t prepared for how this felt.
Walking into Super Nintendo World, my first thought was: this doesn’t feel like a theme park. It feels like the actual world.

Everything is built to scale and in exact detail — the Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser’s Castle, every block and pipe. With a Power-Up Band, you can physically punch blocks, collect coins, and interact with the environment. Adults get genuinely excited. There’s no other way to put it.
If you only have time for one area, make it this one.
Getting There
Address: 2-1-33 Sakurajima, Konohana Ward, Osaka
By train: JR Yumesaki Line to Universal City Station — about a 2-minute walk to the entrance. From Osaka Station: approximately 5 minutes. From Kyoto or Tokyo: take the Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka, then connect to USJ in about 30 minutes total.
Download the app before you go
The official USJ app is essential — Area Entry Tickets, wait times, park maps, and real-time updates all in one place.
One Last Thing
USJ without a plan is a recipe for spending most of your day in queues. USJ with a plan is one of the best days you can have in Japan.
Every time I look back at photos from that visit, I want to go again.
